Design for 102 Bed Co-Living Scheme Submitted in Lambeth
Our design for a Co-Living scheme in the heart of Streatham has been submitted for planning.
If approved, this will create 102 Co-Living units at Shrubbery Road together with extensive communal leisure and workspaces to appeal to a diverse range of residents. The scheme will regenerate a vacant site in the Borough by converting the old Streatham Police Station while adding a new build element in the former car park.
Arranged in three blocks varying in height up to five storeys, our proposal seeks to retain and refurbish as much of the original buildings as possible, while adding modern elements to suit the Co-Living model. Each block contains high quality communal facilities, outdoor spaces and accessible units, yet has been deliberately designed with careful massing and architectural detailing so the whole development sits sympathetically within its surroundings, which includes the Streatham High Road and Streatham Hill Conservation Area.
Oscar Clarke is the project lead. He comments: “Streatham is a lively neighbourhood with sustainable travel connections, community facilities and high street stores. The site occupies a prime location among these amenities and is therefore ideal for Co-Living, yet has remained vacant for almost a decade since the police station’s closure.
“This application is designed to revitalise the area, transforming an underutilised car park into high quality, sustainable, Co-Living accommodation. Through restoring the old police station, the proposal respects the site’s local heritage, giving the scheme a strong sense of character,” adds Oscar.
The scheme’s material palette was inspired by the former police station, so the primary cladding will use orange brick with a Flemish bond. Contrasting materials include slate grey brick and aluminium cladding for the top floor. Restorative enhancements are also proposed to the former police station.
To facilitate community cohesion, particular attention to detail has been given to the scheme’s shared spaces. These include a media room, gym, communal dining room, lounges, co-working spaces, outdoor terraces and gardens.
