Third Phase of Harlow Masterplan Approved

As reported in BD Magazine, the masterplan across three sites in Wych Elm, Harlow, representing circa 200 new homes, has been approved.

Our design for the new developments at 4, 5 and 10 Wych Elm will continue the sustainable extension of the town centre into the Wych Elm area. Formerly industrial land, this area was identified by Harlow Council for a new urban neighbourhood, providing residential units as well as shops, cafes and amenity spaces. Together with The Square, an existing development, 4, 5 and 10 Wych Elm form four distinctive corners for Wych Elm and define a new entrance and character for the neighbourhood.

At committee last week, the application for 4 Wych Elm was approved, completing the trio. Each of the three schemes will provide a mix of residential apartments and ground floor commercial space while a new public realm will establish connections between the town centre and nearby Rectory Wood.

Our director, Oliver Lowrie said: “Harlow town centre is experiencing a significant sea change in its context, particularly on the northern boundary where Wych Elm is located. This newly approved group of sustainable developments are purposefully designed to present a unified approach for the key corners of Wych Elm, and act as a catalyst for future regeneration.”

Key features of our design include:

  • 194 new homes including studio, one- and two-bedroom designs, and accessible units

  • Ground level commercial units for new businesses, providing an active street frontage

  • A characterful material palette of dark and light grey brick, white brick, anthracite surrounds and balustrades

  • An impressive public realm and landscaped green gateway to reconnect the town centre with Rectory Wood

  • Communal gardens at ground level and on rooftops, making attractive environments for residents as well as a tangible connection with the green corridor towards Rectory Wood

  • Inherently sustainable buildings that offer high levels of energy efficiency and occupant comfort

  • Establishment of Wych Elm as a new Northern Quarter of the town centre and a great place where people will want to live and work
