Consent for Boutique Development of Barn-Style Homes in Essex

A bespoke housing development we designed in the green belt has been granted planning permission.

A former livery yard on the eastern side of Billericay, Essex, will be converted into a distinct development of five executive family homes, each with private parking, gardens and integrated renewables including solar panels.

Our design strategy for this newly approved site followed three key principles:

1) A rural layout

The scheme is arranged in a courtyard style, both for ease of access and to reflect similar farmyard layouts in the surrounding area.

2) Vernacular and views

Varied roof heights and car ports create an undulating roofline befitting the local vernacular. The courtyard layout also ensures all homes benefit from views over the neighbouring fields on the site’s southern boundary.

3) Materials

The external design of the homes respects the style of barns both on-site and nearby, and features a red brick plinth, dark horizontal timber weatherboard, plain red roof tiles and anthracite grey metalwork and door/window surrounds.
