Masterplanning & Architecture Workshops For Hackney Students
Alongside our successful AL Academy, which aims to make architectural careers more inclusive, we’re also passionate about engaging with local schools to encourage young people to participate with architecture.
Our part 2 architectural assistants, Joe Maguire and Laurence Richards recently hosted two Masterplanning and Architecture workshops with students from Cardinal Pole Catholic School in Hackney. They were tasked to imagine their own communities, pick out the best bits plus what they think is missing, and turn it into their own design. Students also then chose one of the buildings within the neighbourhood and designed it in groups.
Laurence said: “The workshops were a perfect opportunity to give the students a better understanding of what we do, and more importantly, letting them know that the architectural profession welcomes everyone. Hopefully it inspires them towards a career path they may never have considered.
“All the students were engaging, creative, fun to work with, and highlighted interesting issues that consume their local neighbourhoods. Our key takeaways for the North London Boroughs were:
- Air pollution remains a constant problem
- Getting away from the noise of the city can be difficult
- Local green and blue spaces need investment
- Local community and youth facilities are in DESPERATE demand.”
Many thanks to Jonathan Howard, Karen Pollard and Roisin Feeny for the opportunity.
