Build Build Build with Lord Moylan

Last month we hosted a hybrid ‘in person’ and ‘virtual’ roundtable session with Lord Moylan at our studios for the latest event as part of our ‘Build Build Build’ series to discuss the government's future infrastructure and planning targets, alongside the potential changes in development due to the new planning whitepaper and upcoming use class changes.

Lord Moylan spoke on the key issues and challenges being explored by the government, and what opportunities for Architects and Developers that these areas present, including:

Changes to use class allocations will undoubtedly encourage developers and architects to produce schemes that weren’t previously viable, but there is a need to create flexible local design codes to ensure developments are relevant to their surrounding contexts.

Domestic Heating: Heating generally accounts for 22% of our emissions, if you are going to achieve zero carbon then all gas boilers will need to be replaced with another method of heating.

Rail: HS2 phase 1 to Birmingham will be going ahead, the government is currently creating an integrated rail plan which may affect the following stages of HS2.

Water: There is no 'National Grid' of water so water can't be moved around the country easily, there are some conversations about how to do this as the need for water increases in the South East of the UK. Where there are areas that suffer from 'too much' water a large portion of the budget has been earmarked for flood defences.

Broadband: Full fibre broadband is being rolled out across the country but will need subsidies to reach all of the UK.

Nuclear Power: Our existing stock of Nuclear power stations is aging and there is a need to replace them.
