London’s Moving East Focus on Redbridge

As part of their “London’s Moving East” series, Ackroyd Lowrie hosted an event focused on the East London borough of Redbridge.

Redbridge is a rapidly changing borough with an ambitious regeneration programme. Sharon Strutt, Head of Regeneration, lead the event with attendees including Swan Housing, Skyrooms, Henley Homes and Pocket Living to learn Redbridge’s strategic vision for the borough.

Strutt shared her visions for the borough’s regeneration which involves the diversification of high streets and expansion of economic opportunities. Whilst Crossrail Corridor is transforming the borough, Strutt highlighted that sales values are still low, which can be a hindrance to the delivery of new homes.

In addition, the nighttime economy is lacking, and with an influx of new young residents, the borough is pushing for venues to open that will appeal to this new demographic. The council are using their assets to promote the growth in this sector and have signed a deal to locate Mercato Metropolitano, an Italian food market, in one of their own properties.

Overall, clarity and consolidated thinking was evident from the regeneration, property and planning teams, with departments displaying a clear plan for where development is wanted. Allan Jones, Head of Urban Design, gave attendees an overview of the planning process, touching on how it is different in the borough, engagement with members to avoid surprises at committee, embracing new technology such as Vu City and 3D members briefings.
