The brief

The brief for this project was to create a home for a pioneering new facility focused on post-operative rehabilitation & recovery. The existing Richmond Inn Hotel was selected because of its fantastic location and beautiful, locally listed façade.

However, the hotel had been extended unsympathetically over the years so the brief was to remove these, and provide an exceptional, modern facility alongside an environment where recouperation is encouraged.

Our approach

Our approach was to lovingly restore the existing ‘building of townscape merit’ (BTM), stripping it back to its original form. New extensions wrap around the central courtyard and will be built in a sympathetic language that respects the context outwardly.

On the inside of the courtyard, the architecture is more contemporary, but the rhythm of the façade still reflects the BTM to which the extension joins.

Our design

The existing BTM on Sheen Road is being retained and significantly improved, including the construction of a new extension wing to the rear, with dedicated physiotherapy, hydrotherapy and occupational therapy suites. The building will provide high-quality accommodation, where clients receive tailored programmes of physical rehabilitation and 24-hour recovery care.

As well as making environmental upgrades to the existing historic building and removal of non-original features, a lush courtyard garden is proposed which will be at the heart of the facility.

Whilst the exterior of the building responds directly to the language of the BTM, the courtyard elevations wrap the beautifully planted courtyard with contemporary detailing and high-quality materials.

The building will target BREEAM Excellent and also undertake the WELL certification programme, which seeks to deliver schemes that are beneficial for health and wellbeing both during design & construction, and when the building is operational.

The Result

Construction is due to commence shortly, with opening planned for early 2025.
