Robert Fitzroy Academy

Jon Ackroyd was the Project Architect for this £7.5m extension and renovation project which provided a new 4th form entry Primary School for Croydon Council in a collection of Victorian, 1950s and 1960s buildings that had been neglected for decades. Architype won the 2015 AJ Retrofit Award for this project, and the buildings are now well loved by the new pupils and staff.

The approach was to strip the building back to its original features which had been obscured by successive refurbishments. Original glazed, coloured wall tiles that run through the buildings informed the palette of colours chosen for modern additions. Wherever possible, this building celebrates natural light and natural ventilation and the original Victorian environmental strategies were reused and enhanced.
