Conversion at New City College Creates Dedicated Special Educational Needs Centre

Students at New City College with Special Educational Needs (SEN) and disabilities will now benefit from a dedicated centre at the Ardleigh Green campus.

Work to convert an existing ground floor science block into a SEN centre has been completed and handed over by contractor, Thomas Sinden. With the primary aim to provide a nurturing and inclusive learning environment, the project has seen the existing building reconfigured to provide:

  • New primary entrance and reception

  • Sensory room with specialist acoustic ceiling panels

  • 10 general purpose classrooms

  • Kitchen classroom

  • Life skills studio

  • IT classroom

  • Speech & Language and Job Coaching meeting rooms

  • Ancillary offices and storage

“This project is a prime example of the importance of creative re-use in the built environment,” explains our director, Oliver Lowrie. “With a reconfigured layout and thoughtful interventions, including imaginative interior design by Sam Cox, we’ve created bespoke learning environments that serve specific needs of the students, all while retaining an existing building.

“When we were approached to deliver this project, there was a tight deadline to complete the works ahead of the new term, so quick decision-making and collaboration within the project team was essential. Samual Mann at Thomas Sinden did an incredible job of co-ordinating the works and completing ready for the new term,” concluded Oli.
